Granite vs. Marble Stairs

Indoor marble commercial staircase in Wisconsin

A marble staircase adds elegance and luxury to any business interior.

Natural stone is an ideal choice for stairs, but is granite or marble better for your stairs? The answer depends on your budget, the look you prefer, and the amount of maintenance you’re willing to perform.

Marble stairs:

  • Cost more than granite
  • Require polishing every few years
  • Require upkeep to remove scratches or stains (especially if heavily trafficked or damaged when moving furniture, etc)

Granite stairs:

  • Cost less than marble
  • Do not require frequent polishing
  • Are less slippery than marble
  • Resist stains, scratches and cracking better than marble

Granite Plus custom stonework specialists will help you choose the best material for natural stone steps, stair treads or tiles. We work with the best stone suppliers to bring Wisconsin home and business owners the widest selection. Unlike other granite fabricators, we offer truly competitive prices and fast turnaround.

We have hundreds of colors, textures and patterns to choose from, and if you don’t see what you’re looking for in our New Berlin showroom we can easily order it for your from our network of partners to make sure you get the exact stone you need, at the best possible price.

How to Clean Granite Stairs

Granite stairs are low maintenance and durable, lasting for generations.

To keep your outdoor natural stone stairs looking their best, you should sweep debris or use a leaf blower to clear them as needed. Remove weeds or other plants if they begin to grow over the steps. Rinse granite stairs with water or clean with soap and water.

Granite Plus uses InvisaBLOCK, a leading sealant heavily used in the granite fabrication industry. InvisaBLOCK creates an invisible barrier above and below the stone’s surface to provide maximum stain protection. InvisaBLOCK does not change the appearance of your stone and comes with a 15 year warranty. We recommend having us seal your granite steps or stair treads to provide the best available protection.

Rough granite steps

Rough granite steps are porous, and if there is moisture under or around your stone steps you may have to remove efflorescence, a white powder formed by mineral salts seeping up from below the granite and evaporating. You can also work with a contractor to find and remove the source of moisture.

If rainwater pools on your stairs it should be mopped or removed to prevent staining.

In the winter, keeping up with snow removal on your stone steps will help prevent water problems (such as excess moisture causing efflorescence).

Is ice melt safe for natural stone stairs?

There are many different chemicals used as ice melt on exterior walkways.

Rock salt (Sodium Chloride) is cheap, but do not use rock salt, because it will break down natural stone (as well as concrete and mortar).

Calcium Chloride is widely available, works well down to -25 degree temperatures and won’t damage natural stone. It can leave a white residue, so whenever possible remove the melted ice promptly. Calcium Chloride can irritate skin and airways, so use gloves and possibly even respiratory protection.

Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) is more environmentally friendly than salt-based ice melt products and has been widely tested. It’s safe to use on natural stone stairs, and as an added bonus will not harm pets or plants. One drawback is it does not work well in sub-zero temperatures.
